UXcentric

As it’s Rail Safety Week at the Rail Forum it’s a great chance to revisit the updates to the passenger information display on the upper concourse at Manchester Piccadilly, in a joint project with UXcentric Ltd. with Tim Court from Infotec and Scott Green from Network Rail, amongst others.

Scott had an idea about communicating to passengers when exactly to make their way to their service, to avoid excessive numbers of people on platforms 13 & 14 and thus reduce the potential for incidents.

Working together we saw that vision through. Providing a clear call to action in three specific stages, we took passengers through a staged journey of 1. Wait, 2. Prepare and 3. Go, which helps manage the volume of traffic.

Using colour AND annotated icons, passengers know exactly what to do and when to get to their service.

The whole display underwent a revamp to simplify and prioritise key pieces of information.

The new display has gone down very well with passengers and staff alike, and on my regular visits to Manchester Piccadilly to get to Crewe and back to Teesside, the system is working incredibly well.
